Barn Design Ideas
An old barn about to be demolished offers a multitude of options for resourceful people. Interior joists, beams, and floorboards can be salvaged and restored to their original shine. The use of the exterior cladding is somewhat more restricted, after a life in the elements the boards are weathered and often still cling to the remains of their last coat of paint. We believe that reclaimed barn planks have a wonderful place in contemporary design. They convey a sense of history and character that is difficult to find in modern materials, and they have the environmental benefit of reusing a resource that would otherwise be thrown away. Working with salvaged barn boards is not easy. Planks can be rough, brittle, and by no means square. It takes patience, care, and finesse for these boards to work in modern cabinets. A recent project illustrated the challenges of working with this unique material.

The carpenter had to first mill the boards so that they could be attached to a lower line for more stability and strength while maintaining the original surface of the boards by only milling the back. Due to the nature of the wood, the knots can loosen during the milling process. After gluing the barn boards together, he had the arduous task of filling all the nodes with appropriate pieces of discarded boards. Picking tweezers isn’t often a carpenter’s tool, but a good carpenter will go the extra mile. Floating shelves. Reclaimed barn boards make great shelves, rustic in style with a modern twist. Creating a miter edge and adjusting the grain is not an easy task and requires real skill. Kitchen islands. The island is usually the center of a kitchen. This is where people gather to eat and socialize. When properly designed, it can look as good as it works. The island can be a great place to mix
materials and bring different textures and colors to your space. Consider framing the barn board with hardwood so that the barn wood becomes more of a work of art than just a choice of materials. Other creative uses. Barn doors (yes, made from real barns), custom lights are some of the ways this cool material can be used creatively. Planks can be used to create beautiful walls or ceilings and can be artistically installed to create unique spaces. The possibilities are endless and a little goes a long way. Teams of garbage collectors travel across the country in search of barns that are on their last legs. All the wood is carefully cut, kiln-dried, and shredded to order. It can be used in any design you choose.
